I read with pleasure the April 18 Associated Press article that: “Old Orchard Beach is the latest Maine community attempting to clamp down on motorcycle noise. The tourist town, which used to be a popular destination for bikers, is proposing an ordinance that would prohibit the use of noisy exhaust pipes or the removal of mufflers entirely. The measure also would bar bikers from revving their engines to cause more noise. The proposal is similar to an ordinance instituted last month in Portland. The Old Orchard Beach Town Council will hold a public hearing on the measure May 6.”

I wish the community of OOB well and hope the ordinance gets the support it should. This action is long overdue. If you have ever visited OOB you must have seen and heard these bikers circling the downtown area.

This very controversial issue needs to be dealt with by the City Council of Lewiston as well.

Spring has arrived and so have the inconsiderate bikers that are a nuisance, polluting the air with their loud noise. I know that not all of the bikers are noisy, only the inconsiderate ones.

An ordinance similar to the one being considered by OOB is needed in Lewiston. This issue should not be confrontational to those bikers who are considerate and, in fact, should be a relief to them to not be associated with the loud bikers.

I strongly encourage Lewiston elected officials and city administration to address and correct this issue.
