It took rescue workers more than 20 minutes to get the driver out of his cab.

AUBURN – Firefighters freed a truck driver from a mangled cab after he flipped a tractor-trailer while driving onto the Maine Turnpike at exit 12 Wednesday night.

The truck driver’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. However, he remained pinned in the cab of the truck for more than 20 minutes before rescue crews extricated him.

Firefighters smashed out the windshield and maneuvered the driver out of the vehicle. The driver’s name was not immediately available.

Auburn and Maine State Police responded to the crash scene along with Auburn firefighters. Crews initially feared the trailer was loaded with hazardous materials. It was later learned it was not.

The driver was hauling a load for New England Public Warehouse of South Paris when he crashed. It was unknown what he was hauling.

The cab of the rig came to rest driver-side down on the on-ramp pavement. The trailer slid over a sharp embankment, coming to rest on the grass.

While firefighters struggled to free the driver, others stood by with hoses in case part of the vehicle caught fire. Liquids that leaked from the vehicle were soaked into absorbent pads.

The victim, who remained conscious throughout the ordeal, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Maine State Police were investigating the crash.
