GORHAM, N.H. (AP) – Fish and Game divers planned to resume searching Monday morning for a 21-year-old Gorham man presumed drowned while kayaking in the Androscoggin River near Gorham.
Officials were not releasing the man’s identity.
Fish & Game Sgt. Douglas Gralenski said three young men were kayaking around 6 p.m. Sunday when two of them decided to go over a dam.
“Both capsized. One made it to shore. One struggled and did not,” Gralenski said.
The third man called 911 on a cell phone.
The kayaker who made it to shore was taken to the hospital suffering from the cold. He was not seriously injured.
Officials said the river was about 53 degrees. Neither of the kayakers were wearing life jackets.
The dam is about 12 feet tall and is about a 1/2 mile north of the junction of Routes 16 and 2 in Gorham.
Gralenski said the man who is presumed drowned may have bought his boat in the last day or two.
“They were not experienced,” he said. “What they chose to do was bad judgment.”
