LIVERMORE FALLS – The SAD 36 Board of Directors made several appointments Thursday night in addition to naming Matt Gilbert the new principal at Livermore Falls Middle School with a two-year contract.
Placed on continuing contracts were Sarah Hubbard, Robert Miller, Michelle Pratt and Amanda Winslow, all at Livermore Elementary School; Troy Eastman at the middle school; and Jayne Costa, Amy Druzba and Robbin Nichol at the high school.
Costa’s appointment was unusual as she taught at the high school only two days before being called to military duty with the National Guard. According to law, her position must be held for her and she has no obligation to resign. Superintendent Terry Despres said he believes she won’t be returning but the district must stay in compliance.
Approved as probationary teachers were Fran Spiotta at Livermore Elementary; Heidi Broomhall, Laureen Olsen and Amanda Schultze at the middle school and Malcolm Haynes, Gladys Russell and Ginger Stoneton at the high school.
Also named to a continuing contract was Agnes O’Shea, school nurse. Brenda Merrill was named to the half time position as accounts payable clerk at the central office.
She is also administrative secretary for special education, a position that will be changed from full- to part-time next year and her office moved to the central office.
Named to co-curricular positions were: Warren Forbes as seventh-grade team leader, softball coach, timer at basketball and coach for intramural volleyball.
Also at the middle school, Harriet Chassie as yearbook adviser; Russell Cotnoir, soccer coach; and Gregory Keene, boys basketball coach.
Despres also announced that the last student day will be on June 11, a half day with buses leaving the middle and high schools at 11:30 a.m. and LES at 1 p.m.
He reviewed the referendum timetable that includes a public hearing at 7 p.m. May 29 at the LFHS cafeteria.
That notice will be posted May 22, absentee ballots will be available May 27, the warrant will be posted June 3, specimen ballots on May 6, and the referendum vote will be June 10.
Despres also told the board about the $52,400 being held in undesignated reserve in Article 13 on the upcoming warrant. It is being held until the state takes final action on its school support.
If not needed to make up a shortfall in state funding, it will be considered by the board under the Part II budget, he said.
Director Kim LaVoie reported for the Fields Facilities Committee that now has two groups, one studying field usage and the other seeking grants. They have reached the point at which a consultant is needed, he said.
Despres spoke about the need to have a Comprehensive Plan and to do a full review of the district’s policies for compliance with present law. “Some policies are getting aged,” he said.
One policy that needs immediate attention is on suspensions. Once a student goes beyond 10 days of suspension (per year), an educational program must be offered as a whole new due process is triggered at number 11, he explained.
