AUGUSTA – The Maine Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, Health and Wellness will present its fifth annual Contest for Communities awards at a celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the State House Hall of Flags.

People and programs will be recognized for the role they play in supporting a healthy Maine through physical fitness and sports programs.

This year’s area winners include:

Youth Award (tie): “Williams-Cone’s Fit for Life Program,” Williams-Cone Elementary School, Topsham; “Noon Time Walking Program,” Hichborn Middle School, Howland; and “Teamwalk 2003,” D.W. Merritt School, Addison.

Honorable mention

“Step To It”: Walking and Pedometer Program, Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute, Lewiston.

“Raising Heart Healthy Kids – Celebrating Heart Month on Pleasant Mountain,” Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute, Lewiston.

Auburn Wellness Program, Auburn.

“Multi-Dimensional Community Program,” Auburn-Lewiston YMCA, Auburn.

First Step Health and Fitness, Lisbon.

“Dining Services Wellness Challenge,” Bowdoin College, Brunswick.

“Heart Time,” University of Maine at Farmington Health and Fitness Center, Farmington.

“Smart Choices: A Weight Management Program,” University of Maine at Farmington Health and Fitness Center, Farmington.

“Learn to Swim Program,” University of Maine at Farmington Health and Fitness Center, Farmington.
