SABATTUS – Nancy Kelley, the 61-year-old woman injured in a crash on Bowdoinham Road Tuesday, died Wednesday morning at a Lewiston hospital.

The Sabattus woman underwent surgery at Central Maine Medical Center late Tuesday night for injuries suffered in the 2:30 p.m. crash, police said.

Police said Kelley’s minivan collided head-on with a car headed in the opposite direction at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the car, 21-year-old Jennifer Berube of Wales, remained in fair condition Wednesday at CMMC.

Investigators said both victims suffered broken bones, cuts and internal injuries. Each of them had to be extricated from their mangled vehicles.

The crash occurred roughly a half mile from the intersection at Route 9, police said. That stretch of Bowdoinham Road has been notorious for serious vehicle crashes in the past, according to police and residents who live in the area.

Police who reconstructed the crash on Tuesday said it appeared Berube’s Pontiac drifted over the center line and into oncoming traffic.

The car and van collided in an area where the road curves, police said. However, it was not known Wednesday what caused Berube to lose control of her Pontiac Grand Am.

A section of Bowdoinham Road remained closed to traffic for hours as Maine State Police assisted Sabattus police with a reconstruction of the crash scene.

According to Sabattus police Sgt. Rick Bates, the results of the investigation are expected to be determined in a week or so.
