STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) – MeadWestvaco Corp. is considering selling hundreds of thousands of acres of land in northern New England.
The paper company said Thursday it is exploring the sale of its 636,000 acres of land in Maine and New Hampshire.
The company said that any sale would depend on a favorable price, the ability to maintain a long-term wood supply for its paper mill in Rumford, Maine, and assurances that the land is managed using sustainable forestry practices. “The sale will be contingent upon achieving a balanced set of objectives,” Mark T. Watkins, MeadWestvaco’s senior vice president for forestry and technology, said Thursday.
Last year, after a reviewing and assessment of its more than 3 million acres of forest, MeadWestvaco announced its intention to sell approximately 700,000 acres.
MeadWestvaco is headquartered in Stamford with annual sales of about $8 billion. The company produces packaging, coated and specialty papers, consumer and office products and specialty chemicals.
