1918 – 2003

PALMYRA – Alice Eleanor Hopkins, 85, died peacefully May 15, at her home in Palmyra surrounded by her family.

She was born Jan. 6, 1918, a daughter of Amos and Della (Keene) Harris. She was a graduate of Mechanic Falls High School, class of 1935; and Farmington State Normal School (University of Maine at Farmington), Class of 1938.

She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at the University of Maine at Orono in 1965. She taught in several rural schools for seven years before she married Carl Alfred Hopkins. Later she taught at the Corinna Elementary School for 15 years.

After retiring from teaching, she was very active with RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) of Eastern Maine, and also the Hospital Chaplaincy Service. She was a member of the Corinna United Methodist Church, where she was Sunday School superintendent for a number of years. She also belonged to the United Methodist Women and the Corinna Senior Citizens Club.

She was a past president of Penobscot Retired Teachers, and the Corinna Literary Club, a past secretary and lecturer of the Dexter Grange, a past deputy of the East Somerset Pomona Grange and the Cleora Rebekah Lodge 111 of Corinna. She had been a Grange member for 70 years and had received all seven degrees. She enjoyed quilt making, handicrafts, gardening, reading and travel. Carl and Alice celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in June of 2000.

She is survived by five daughters, Ruth Hopkins of Winthrop, Mass., Mrs. Willis (Beverly) Moody of Findlay, Ohio, Mrs. Thomas (Carlene) Muller of Poland Spring, Mary Anne Knowles of Palmyra and Cathy Hopkins of Lyman; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Hopkins of Dexter; eight grandchildren, Heather Dennington and husband Jeff, Carolyn Donaldson and husband John, Catherine Knowles and husband Rick, Alexander Muller, Margaret Muller, Ryon Moody, Hilary and Jessica Stephenson; five great-grandchildren, Steven and Elizabeth Dennington, Alice Donaldson, Samuel Donaldson, and Casey Honer; a very close nephew, Arthur Harris; and many other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her half-brothers and sisters.
