AUBURN – Police on Friday were trying to determine if drag racing or road rage led to a rollover crash on Washington Street that left a Raymond man in critical condition.

Justin Frazier, 21, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with multiple injuries suffered in the 10:40 a.m. crash on southbound Washington Street, police said.

Investigators were searching for a second car believed to have been racing along side Frazier’s Pontiac Grand Am just before the crash.

Police said both cars were driving faster than 100 mph when Frazier’s car flipped in the roadway and crashed through a guardrail.

Frazier was alone in his car when he lost control, police said. It was unclear if he was familiar with the man driving a second Grand Am seen speeding next to Frazier’s car.

The driver of that car left the scene before police, fire and rescue crews arrived to free Frazier from his mangled vehicle.

While firefighters pulled Frazier from the wreck, police began an investigation into the cause of the crash. The investigation was continuing into Friday night.

“They are still interviewing witnesses and trying to determine exactly what happened,” said Moe Bolduc, of the Auburn Police Department.

Frazier’s car struck a guardrail, crossed the road and came to rest on its passenger side on an embankment beyond the guardrail on the other side of Washington Street, police said. Rescue crews ripped the roof off the Grand Am to free him.

According to witnesses, Frazier was unconscious when police and fire officials first arrived. As he was being removed, however, Frazier regained consciousness and began screaming.

His girlfriend told police Frazier was returning from a job interview in Buckfield at the time of the crash. He had bought the Grand Am recently, police said.

Investigators were hoping to speak with the driver of the second vehicle– a red Grand Am — seen speeding alongside Frazier’s car. They also were asking that anyone with information about the crash call the Auburn Police Department at 784-7332.

Police Officer Jason Moore was heading the investigation Friday night.
