1911 – 2003

FARMINGTON – Bernice I. Wells Merrill Moore, 92, of New Vineyard died Tuesday morning, May 20, at the Sandy River Center for Health Care.

She was born Jan. 9, 1911, in New Vineyard, a daughter of the late Harry O. and Lena D. (Allen) Wells. In 1956 she married Lewis Moore. Mrs. Moore worked all throughout her life.

For several years she lived in Windsor, Vt., and worked for Good Year Tire. After moving back to Maine she worked for Forster’s Manufacturing in Strong later going to Smith Manufacturing Co. in New Vineyard. After moving to Rangeley she worked along with her husband care taking for Rangeley View Camps and raised hens and was known in Rangeley as the “Egg Lady.”

Mrs. Moore always raised vegetables and loved working in her flower gardens. She enjoyed doing puzzles, reading, and knitting mittens especially for the home for “Little Wanderers” in Waterville.

Over the years she would attend the former Congregational Church in New Vineyard and she was a faithful member of the Calvary Bible Church in Stratton.

Mrs. Moore is survived by four daughters, Nettie E. and her husband Stephen M. Spencer of Windsor, Vt., Blanche Higgins and her friend Joe Nowak of Elmiria, Mich., Arlene and her husband Guy F. Davis of New Vineyard, Sandra C. and her husband Earland Dexter of Kingfield; two sons, Harris and his wife Lillian Merrill of Anson, Edward M. and wife Carolee Merrill of New Vineyard; two sisters, Sylvia Holbrook of New Vineyard, Frances Roberts of Windham; sister-in-law, Gussie Wells; brother-in-law, Clyde Park; 27 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Lewis; an ex-husband, Maurice Merrill; five sisters, Alverna Parlin, Ester Fletcher, Marion Orcutt, Emma Hargreaves, Virginia Park; two brothers, George and Venora “Pink” Wells; a sister-in-law, Edna Wells; seven brothers-in-law, Millard Parlin, Roland Fletcher, Elwin Orcutt, Harold Hargreaves, Henry Goodyke, Irving Holbrook, John Roberts; two grandchildren, Joni Kim Magno, Bruce Edward Merrill.
