MEXICO – Region 9 School of Applied Technology and its adult and community education program have many end-of-the-year activities planned, the Region 9 board learned Tuesday night.

Cheryl Ellis, student services coordinator, said the annual awards dinner takes place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at the Eagles Club in Rumford. Here, students are presented certificates of completion for their individual vocational programs, awards are given for outstanding work, and several students will be inducted in the National Vocational-Technical Honor Society. A light supper will be served to students and their parents prior to the program.

The Woodsmen’s Meet takes place at the Oxford County Fairgrounds in Oxford on May 22 and 23. Students from the Region 9 forestry program will take part in the annual competition.

On June 2, an open house will be held at a ranch-style home that was constructed by students in the building trades program on the South Rumford Road. Community Concepts will be selling the home to an eligible family.

Nancy Murphy, director of adult and community education, said this year’s graduation of students who have either earned their GED or a high school diploma under the adult education program will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Mountain Valley Middle School.

She said more than 20 will have earned their high school equivalency or high school diploma this year, including father-son and mother-daughter duos.

The board also agreed to compensate forestry instructors Marc Dupuis and Mark Touchette for hours they worked over April vacation due to the vandalism of the program’s skidder.

In other matters, the board approved the calendar for school year 2003-04. Region 9 teachers will begin Aug. 25, while students will attend their first classes Sept. 2.
