SANFORD (AP) – A 29-year-old woman was seriously injured Wednesday when she jumped from a third-story window to escape from a fire in her Springvale apartment.

Lori Grant was transferred from Goodall Hospital to Maine Medical Center, where her condition was listed as critical.

The apartment was engulfed in flames when Sanford emergency and fire crews arrived at the multi-family home shortly after 6 a.m.

Neighbor Mary Downey said she was leaving for her job when she spotted the fire and saw Grant screaming for help from the apartment window.

Downey ran into the building and woke a first-floor resident. By the time Downey got back outside, Grant was ready to jump from the window and Downey couldn’t convince her that help was on the way.

Firefighters worked for more than an hour to extinguish the blaze. One firefighter suffered minor injuries while working with equipment on a truck.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
