The search for a new superintendent may be over soon.

MINOT – The search for a new superintendent for School Union 29 may conclude at a special meeting of the union’s governing committee Tuesday night when a candidate is presented.

Lisa Bridgham, speaking at Tuesday night’s Minot School Committee meeting, said she and fellow School Committee member Colleen Quint met earlier in the day with the superintendent search committee to iron out details of the contract for the unnamed person.

Provided the Union 29 committee approves the appointment, the search committee will have succeeded in its efforts to secure a timely replacement for Robert Wall, whose resignation becomes effective at the end of June.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at Poland Regional High School.

During its business of the evening, the Minot School Committee authorized Minot Consolidated School Principal Don Bilodeau to advertise for a half-time gifted and talented teacher and a half-time French teacher. The committee stipulated the French teacher be assigned to teach middle school level students.

Also approved was a move to upgrade the position of art teacher to be filled by a certified teacher rather than an education technician III.

Bilodeau’s plan to institute a summer school enrichment program for younger students also received approval. Federal “no child left behind” funds will be used in teaching some 27 students who have signed up for the 15-day program. The program is geared to upgrade reading and math skills.

The committee also approved Union 29 Service Director Frank D’Augustino’s recommendation that Harold Bridgham be awarded the contract to harvest timber from the recently acquired properties adjacent to the school.

D’Augustino said that while several loggers expressed intent and walked the land, Bridgham was the only one to submit a bid. He attributed the lack of response to the fact that much of the best timber had been cut before the town acquired the property, leaving what amounts to a rather small operation. Proceeds from the sale of the lumber will be set aside for future development of the land.
