RUMFORD – The town’s Citizen of the Year will be honored when selectmen meet on Thursday.

The board will also discuss tentative plans for a new fire station.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the conference room of the Municipal Building.

Long-time resident Tony Poirier will be the recipient of this year’s Citizen of the Year award. Poirier has served on the Rumford Hospital board and has volunteered in many other committees and activities in town over the years.

The board annually honors a Rumford resident who has given many hours for the benefit of the town and its people. Poirier will be presented with a plaque in his honor. His name will also be added to other honorees on a wood and brass plaque on the first floor of the Municipal Building.

Fire Chief John Woulfe will learn whether a tentative plan for construction of a new fire station will go to the next step. Port City Architecture of Portland, and Enterprise Engineering of Freeport recently drew up a plan to build a new station on a possible site alongside the Androscoggin River off Rumford Avenue.

The plan was presented last month to the board for comment, questions and recommendations.

If the board approves the plan, a special town meeting would be called to get the required approval by townspeople.

Woulfe will also seek direction on the finding a place to store a recently purchased ladder truck. The Congress Street fire station is too small to house the large piece of fire-fighting apparatus.

Other agenda items include action on a variety of hawker’s and peddler’s licenses, a discussion of hours for the code enforcement officer, discussion on a request by Jeri Geronda for a low-interest loan, and appointments for warden and deputy warden for the June referendum election.
