RUMFORD – Several teams and individual athletes were honored by the Maine State Legislature Tuesday night at the SAD 43 board meeting.

Goodbyes were also said to four board members whose terms expire next week.

Rep. Randy Hotham, R-Dixfield, and John Patrick, D-Rumford, presented special legislative honors to the Mountain Valley High School boys basketball team who won the Western Maine Class B championship; the high school boys Alpine Ski Team who took the Class B state championship; and to the high school boys wrestling team who took the Western Maine Class B championship.

“Doing this is the good side of the job,” said Hotham as he shook hands with each athlete.

Patrick said such outstanding efforts show that people don’t get anywhere in life unless they put in the effort.

The two also recognized several individual athletes for outstanding performances in their sports.

The board also said farewell to four members who have completed their three-year terms and chose not to run again. For Rumford, Rosie Bradley and David McKivergan ended their tenure; for Mexico, it was Faye and Courtney Prentiss. Their terms officially expire on June 10, the date of the municipal and state elections.

Also on Tuesday, the board appointed Stacey Miller as the Mountain Valley Middle School health teacher, and Craig Dilman as a physical science teacher at the high school. The resignations of high school Assistant Principal Matthew Gilbert and longtime custodian Jim Cormier were accepted.

Gilbert is leaving to assume the principalship of Livermore Falls Middle School. Cormier is retiring after serving the district for 34 years.

Michael Lavorgna was appointed as head teacher at Virginia Elementary School. Barbara DeSalle was appointed to the same position at Rumford Elementary School.

The board also entered into three closed sessions to discuss individual contract negotiations, to discuss a personnel matter, and to receive an update on the search for a new superintendent.
