The contract was won by Taylor-Made homes of Wilton.

DIXFIELD – Pending voter approval at the Saturday, June 7, town meeting, East Dixfield’s tiny, aged fire station will get an addition.

Warrant Article 24 asks voters to authorize municipal officers to borrow $45,000 on a five-year note in paying for half the costs associated with building a new addition to the station.

At a special town meeting on April 1, Wilton voters approved taking $45,000 from surplus to pay half the cost of the proposed $90,000 expansion project.

Wilton and Dixfield share funding of East Dixfield’s Fire Department, which is a subdivision of both larger departments. The East Dixfield Department functions as a first responder unit and also a mutual aid partner for the towns and Jay and South Carthage.

The 75-by-75-foot plot of land where the addition would be built was donated by East Dixfield residents Darryll and Florence Daley, said East Dixfield Fire Chief Randy Hall.

The money will be used to add a two-bay station. Built in 1956, the one-bay station now has a squad truck, a tanker and an engine.

However, due to the size of the station, the 1979 tanker, which the department got from Dixfield when Dixfield’s new firetruck arrived this spring, is currently being housed in Hall’s barn, firefighter Keith Swett said.

Dixfield Town Manager Nanci Allard said that Wilton voters agreed to pay their half of the project costs on the condition that Dixfield voters agree to pay their half. Otherwise, the money that Wilton approved for the project would remain in surplus.

Hall said he put the project out to 13 contractors and got responses back from about half of them. Taylor-Made Homes of Wilton got the contract. “They gave us the best estimate and they’re local,” Hall said.

Construction would be completed by Oct. 1, he said.

At Wilton’s special town meeting, Hall explained that the new addition would serve Dixfield’s, Wilton’s and East Dixfield’s firefighting needs for another 40 to 50 years.
