Officials said they wanted an estimate before OKing work on a bridge.

HARTFORD – Selectmen voiced frustration at a bill for the town’s share of the lumber to re-plank Russell Road bridge.

R.E. Lowell Lumber in Buckfield faxed the town a bill with Hartford’s share of the cost, which was $500.

All three selectmen expressed irritation at not having received an estimate from Sumner selectmen before receiving the bill.

At the May 14 meeting with Sumner Selectman Cliff McNeil, Hartford Selectman Dave Bowen said that he would like to see an estimate before agreeing to share the cost.

In other business, Code Enforcement Officer Kay Hawkins reported that Melissa Rosa of Auburn failed to meet the May 28 deadline to properly implement erosion control. Rose’s driveway on Route 219 is steep, and the runoff drains directly into Little Bear Pond.

Hawkins said she spoke with Rosa, who is building a house at the site, on May 17 to clarify what needs to be done to be in compliance. The requirements: to establish proper erosion controls by properly installing silt fences or hay bales; to seed the embankment; and to install water bars every 2 feet from the house to the road.

According to Hawkins, Rosa said that she was arranging for the driveway to be paved. Hawkins asked that a contract be faxed to her before the May 29 selectmen’s meeting. Hawkins said she has not received a fax or been able to contact Rosa since their meeting on May 17.

Selectman Pete Theriault said he will do a site visit to establish what has been done and what is needed to comply with the town’s erosion control ordinance.

Selectmen told Hawkins to send a letter to Rosa informing her that she has been assessed a fine of $100 effective May 29 for failure to come into compliance. She has until June 10 to complete necessary work or she will be assessed fines of $100 per day retroactive to May 29.

In other business:

The town is looking to establish a five- to eight-member committee to work with selectmen to administrate the cemetery trust fund.

The town’s tow-behind broom is for sale. Bids are due before or at the June 11 selectmen’s meeting.

Selectmen will open all bids that evening.
