1926-2003

SCARBOROUGH – Newell W. Bly, 77, a resident of the Gorham Road, died Thursday, June 5, at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

He was born in Auburn Jan. 27, 1926, a son of George Henry and Florence (Avery) Bly. He attended local schools there and was a graduate of the Litchfield Academy in Litchfield.

Mr. Bly was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marines.

Following the war and for many years after, Mr. Bly worked for several construction companies in various capacities, including crane operator, before his retirement in 1988.

Mr. Bly loved horses and owned several of them over the years.

In earlier years, he was a member of the North Scarborough Grange and an active member of the South Gorham Baptist Church where he served as deacon and a superintendent of the Sunday School program.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Egan, in 2002, and a sister, Christine Cribbin.

Mr. Bly is survived by three sons, Scott L. Bly and his wife, Evelyn, of Sanford, Steve L. Bly and his wife, Joanne, of Buckfield, and Stacy L. Bly of Sanford; a son-in-law, Larry Egan; six daughters, Mrs. John (Sharon Ann) Nickerson of Bangor, Sheila L. George of Portland, Sharon L. Bly of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Larry (Shelley L.) Ziegler of Yuma, Ariz., Stephanie L. Litchfield of Lewiston, Jennifer M. Bly of Portland; a brother, Frank Bly of Florida; three sisters, Dot Dodge of Beverly, Mass., Eleanor Leonard of Kittery and Elsie Atwood of Poland; 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
