FARMINGTON – A summer kickoff will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, in North Dining Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington about upcoming Gold LEAF Institute courses.

Gold LEAF Institute is a member-run organization for lifelong learning affiliated with UMF. Its members are age 50 or older, who seek intellectually stimulating activities and an opportunity to build new friendships.

The curriculum is divided into spring, summer and fall terms and begins with a kickoff meeting where members can learn about and sign up for courses.

This summer’s courses are: “Wool, War and Making Things Better,” a 90-minute presentation by Babbie Cameron on the story of rainbow socks for refugees from the wars in the Balkans, 1994-2000; evening bike rides with Bob Nixon through parts of Farmington, Chesterville and New Sharon; “Solar Cooking” with Paul Floyd and Eileen Kreutz; a visit to Beverly Oliver’s hosta garden; journalism with Alvin DaCosta, Dan Warner and Bobbie Hanstein; travel to Lakewood Theater for a performance of “Incorruptible” or to the Theater at Monmouth for “The Pirates of Penzance”; the adventure of mountain climbing in Ecuador and Africa with Jim Albert and Marti Pike; or a chance survey the safety of your home and explore inspection issues for homeowners and buyers with Jeffrey Mitchell.

To participate in any of these activities or courses, a person must be a member and pay a small course fee, if applicable. Individual membership to Gold LEAF is for a year, starting from the date a person joins. Membership dues are $25 per year.

Membership benefits include the three terms of programs, a subscription to Gold LEAF Happenings, a parking decal for UMF campus, access to the UMF cafeteria with membership card, special rates at certain UMF-sponsored events and social events with other members.

Registration for the summer courses will be open, for courses not already booked up, up to two weeks prior to the scheduled date, but registration is encouraged by June 18. Registrations will be taken by mail or in person at the GLI office at the kickoff event. No phone registrations are accepted.

For more information about the courses, people can call the Gold LEAF office, 778-7063.
