LIVERMORE FALLS – Middle and high school students will have a chance this summer to improve skills, and in some cases, have a better chance of being promoted.

SAD 36 will offer a six-week summer academic session Mondays through Thursdays, June 26 to Aug 7, for students in grades six through 12. There will be no sessions on Friday or July 4.

Middle School Principal Thomas E. Rowe said administrators, teachers and the School Board directors have been talking about an extended school session since the beginning of the school year.

“As the state and SAD 36 have raised their standards,” he said, “it is important for our students to meet these standards before being promoted to the next grade.”

“Basically what we’re saying to kids, if you don’t pass the course you’re not going on,” he said.

Both high and middle school sessions will be held at the high school with grades six through eight on the first floor and ninth through 12th on the second floor.

For Middle School students, classes will be offered in language arts, math and social studies. Classes at that level will begin at 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m.

High School Principal Roderick Wright said classes at the high school level would be offered in English, science, math and social studies. There will be morning and afternoon classes, he said, with details still being worked out.

Although there is no cost for the courses, Rowe said, each parent is responsible for transporting his or her student to and from school. There will be no busing except for maybe an occasional field trip, he said.

“To achieve success in summer school,” he said, “as in any other educational enterprise, one must attend regularly and do the work assigned.”

Wright said a guidance counselor would notify parents of students at the high school level if a summer course is recommended. The sessions will also be open to any student who would like to improve their skills but they wouldn’t receive additional credit if they’ve already earned the course credit.

Letters were sent home to parents of middle school students and team leaders will phone parents of students who are struggling.

To register middle school students for the summer session, parents may call their child’s team leader before Wednesday, June 11. For an eighth-grader, Deb Finley at 897-2121, extension 102, seventh-grader, Warren Forbes at 897-2121, extension 201, sixth-grader, Robin Ouellette at 897-2121, extension 305 or guidance at 897-2121, extension 216.

During the summer session, parents are asked only to call the high school in absolute emergencies.

If such a situation arises, then they may call 897-3428, extension 107 on Mondays and Wednesdays to reach Vicki Thayer-Adams and extension 113 to read Ted Fin on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
