The area food closet will be closed at the beginning of next week and then reopen Thursday at its new location.

FARMINGTON – The Care & Share Food Closet will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 16 to 18, to move into its new home in the Fairbanks Community Meeting House.

It will reopen at noon Thursday, June 19, at the new location.

The Fairbanks Community Meeting House is on the site of the former Fairbanks School. It is less than two miles from downtown Farmington on Route 2 before the Route 27 turnoff to Kingfield. Care & Share will be in renovated quarters on the lower level of the building. There are no stairs to climb, the facility is large, conveniently arranged and flooded with sunlight. It is being rented to Care & Share, a project of the Farmington Ecumenical Ministry, for $1 a year.

The food closet was organized more than 25 years ago by citizens in Farmington. One of its first homes was Trinity United Methodist Church. For several years, it was in the basement of Western Maine Community Action in Wilton. For the past 10 years, it’s been in the basement of Fairbanks Union Church.

The food closet is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that receives donations of money and nonperishable food from the public and government sources. It serves the towns of Farmington, Chesterville, Temple, New Sharon, New Vineyard and New Portland.

Its hours are noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. In July, the Thursday hours will change to 4 to 6 p.m.
