1925 – 2003

NEW LONDON, N.H. – John M. Roberts, 77, long-time resident of Newport, N.H., died Tuesday, June 10, at New London Hospital.

Born in New Hampton, N.H., Oct. 7, 1925, the son of Osborn and Norma Mae Collins Roberts Sr., he was raised and educated in Bristol.

Mr. Roberts joined the U.S. Marines and served gallantly during the Battle of Tarawa, Gilbert Islands during World War II.

He was the recipient of the Silver Star Medal and Purple Heart. Following active duty, he enlisted in the Marine Reserve Corp.

Mr. Roberts was a hard worker, working at Peterson Plastics for four years, then worked several years at Fellows Gear Sharper and the Foundry in Springfield, Vt. He also worked for Dorr Woolen and retired as a machinist from Sturm-Ruger with 28 years of employment.

He enjoyed woodworking, building birdcages and wishing wells. An animal lover, his home was filled with dogs and birds.

He was a homebody, one who enjoyed puttering around the house. He held membership with the VFW and DAV.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Emma (Berry) Roberts of Newport; his son and daughter, Allen and Wenda White of Newport; a brother, Arthur Roberts of Bridgewater, N.H.; and a sister, Hazel Daniels of New Hampton, N.H.

He was predeceased by two brothers, George and Osborn; and two sisters, Rose and Mary.
