AUBURN – Norman Abbott Wood, died peacefully at home on Thursday, June 12.

He was born in Auburn, attended Edward Little High School and graduated from Gold Coast College in Inglewood, Calif.

During World War II, he served in the Pacific with the Maine 103rd Infantry. He made the beachhead at Guadacanal, earning many medals and ribbons. Among them were the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He also survived a severe illness of Dengue Fever and Malaria.

Mr. Wood was a trombone player and played with the Hany James Big Band while he lived out West. He then lived several years in Agawam, Mass., where he served as a Town Selectman and developed then managed the largest Chevrolet dealership in New England. Most of his working years were with Subaru of New England. Back in Maine, he served as the Androscoggin Civil Defense Director.

He also was a District Commander of the VFW. He was a 50-year member of the VFW, the International Order of Odd Fellows and the American Legion. He was a charter member of the Thomas Field Order of the Purple Heart and he was a 50-year member of the Knights of Pythias having served the position as Grand Chancellor of Maine.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Anne Akins Wood, and a son, Eric Orono Wood both of Auburn; a son, Norman Paul Wood and his wife Geny of Fremont, Calif.; daughters, Linda Earle and her husband, Radcliffe of Harpswell, Sally Jordan and her husband, Bernard of Pittsfield, and Virginia Murphy and her husband Dennis of Norco, Calif.
