MONROE – In an effort to support Maine farmers and introduce the benefits of shopping and eating locally, the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, Hancock County Locally Grown Foods Project and Farm Fresh Connection are launching the Maine Foods Network.

Primarily a Web site (www.mainefoods.net) funded by a grant from Coastal Enterprises Inc. (www.ceimaine.org), the Maine Foods Network will illustrate the connection between farmers and local markets, and provide the public with information about how they can access the freshest foods available, while supporting Maine agriculture.

The Web site will provide consumers with the tools they need to find the local food they need.

The site has articles and other information about local farms, about markets that sell local food, as well as markets feeding meals to more than 50,000 people a week.

Since November of 2002, Portland-based Farm Fresh Connection has been working with institutions such as Bates and Bowdoin colleges and Central Maine Medical Center to give Maine farmers more access to the food markets.
