AUGUSTA – Television’s Jimmy Neutron, Slugger the Sea Dog, Smokey the Bear and the UMA Moose are only a few of the friendly characters appearing next month for Maine’s Whatever Family Festival and Day in Capitol Park.

The Chamber-organized festival will feature more than 120 free events and activities from June 20 through July 6, primarily in Augusta and Gardiner locations.

Saturday, June 28, is Family Day in Capitol Park with more than 60 free activities, from musical entertainment and a balloon zoo to dance performances, bounce houses, Old Fort Western trolley rides and dozens of hands-on kids’ activities, plus Jimmy Neutron, Slugger and friends. Family Day will include a country showdown talent contest with Maine performers and a free evening performance by New England bluegrass group, Blistered Fingers.

Whatever also includes a carnival, two softball tourneys, an across-the-river $1 million hole-in-one contest, two fireworks displays, road races, car shows and a 17-mile fort-to-fort canoe-kayak expedition.

Gardiner organizations will kick off the first full day of Whatever on Saturday, June 21, with tug boat tours, children’s art in the park, downtown Gardiner celebration with lots of fun and food, a car parade, an evening talent show and fireworks.

For a calendar of events for the 17-day festival, call the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce. The calendar is also listed at www.AugustaMaine.com.
