The wait will be just a bit longer for Greg Moore.

The University of Maine sophomore from Lisbon is in Nashville for the annual entry draft and spent most of the day Saturday watching as several college players from around the country, including his roommate at the University of Maine Jimmy Howard, were selected.

From Hockey East, Patrick Eaves topped the list of draftees. The Boston College sophomore played minimally last season due to injury, but was selected by Ottowa in the first round on Saturday. Howard went next, picked by Detroit at No. 64 overall, and Massachusetts forward Stephen Werner went in the third round to Washington.

With the first three rounds complete, Moore will wait one more day. Rounds four through nine are today.

There was some speculation before the draft began that Moore may go as high as No. 87 overall. The Hockey News had him ranked that high in its pre-draft listings, even though Central Scouting listed him at No. 69 in North America.

Moore recently completed his freshman season at the University of Maine where he spent some time on special teams. He scored nine goals and added six assists for the Black Bears.

Maineiacs defenseman drafted

Richard Stehlik of the Lewiston Maineiacs was drafted in the second round, No. 76 overall, by the Nashville Predators. Stehlik, at 6’4″ and 241 pounds, is an imposing defenseman, and he has one more year of eligibility with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The QMJHL as a whole did very well at the draft Saturday. Marc-Andre Fleury of Cape Breton was the first overall pick in this year’s draft, taken by Pittsburgh. Fleury is the second goaltender ever taken as the No. 1 pick. The first was Boston University freshman Rick DiPietro in 2000. DiPietro is now with the New York Islanders.

Other players from the QMJHL taken in the first round include Steve Bernier of Moncton (No. 16) and Marc-Antoine Pouliot of Rimouski (No. 22).
