The Wilton facility is celebrating its fifth year.

WILTON – SeniorsPlus Community Center will host an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 26, to mark their fifth year of providing services and social activities for older adults.

The country band Silv’ry Seasons will provide entertainment at the open house. Cake and other refreshments will be offered, and a free raffle will feature many prizes. Tours of the center will be available.

When the center opened in 1998, Sandy Gregor, the center’s coordinator. remembers hearing about two things seniors wanted – computer training and bus trips. “We’ve provided both computer classes and bus trips since the beginning, plus a lot more,” she said.

The Community Center’s activities include cribbage, yoga, bridge, bingo and a writing group. The upcoming bus trips include Windjammer Days in Boothbay Harbor on June 25, Cabbage Island on July 17 and the North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, Mass., to see “Cats” on Aug. 3.

The center’s educational programs include nutrition and Matter of Balance classes. It also serves as a meeting place for Alzheimer’s and caregiver support groups, and the Wilton Senior Citizens. Congressional staff hold public hours there on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m.

The center’s monthly newsletter reaches 950 seniors and is distributed by mail to subscribers and for free through area grocery stores, pharmacies and town offices.

The Wilton location also serves as a place from which SeniorsPlus delivers its services. These include resources for information and assistance, caregivers, nutrition and independence. They serve a meal for seniors at noon Monday through Friday. In addition, at least one special meal is planned each month, which also includes entertainment and door prizes. On a daily basis, more than 300 Meals on Wheels are prepared and distributed from this location to homebound seniors in Franklin and Oxford counties.

The center is on routes 2 and 4, just up the hill from the Dutch-Treat drive-in. It is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information call 645-3315.
