MEXICO – The Region 9 board awarded the contract for paving the front parking lot of the Region 9 School of Applied Technology to Anson contractor Bruce Manzer Tuesday night.

Plans for the paving project have been in the works for several years. The lot at the rear of the school was paved last year and is used for truck-driver training.

The cost of the new paving project, expected to start soon after July 1, came in at $48,970. In addition to the paving, the garden area around the Region 9 sign will be removed and paved over.

A flag pole will be erected at the immediate front of the building.

Director Deborah Guimont said posts will eventually be erected between the school lot and neighboring Dexter Supply. Some curbing will be installed at the front of the lot, which will be landscaped.

Once the paving is complete, she said bids will go out for striping the lot. She estimated those costs to be between $1,000 and $2,000.

In other matters on Tuesday, Guimont said 170 full-time students have signed up for one of the next school year’s vocational programs. All programs are filled except for computer repair and co-operative education.

Guimont told board members that the school is entering into a second agreement with Irving Forest Products of Dixfield for the company’s use of the school for teaching millwright courses.

A similar program was recently completed that resulted in the training of eight millwrights for the forest products company.

Region 9 instructors will teach machine, math and power tool sections, while an outside instructor hired by Irving will teach the remaining portions of the training. She said plans are for Region 9 to try to find a rigging instructor who would teach Irving employees and some of the school’s metal trades students.

The board welcomed newly appointed SAD 21 representative, Ken Robbins.

He is the busing supervisor for SAD 21 and replaces Tim Hanson.

With Robbins’ appointment, all seats from Region 9’s member school districts have been filled.
