HANOVER – Two days after a woman was charged with defrauding doctors to obtain prescription drugs, her husband was charged with endangering the welfare of their child.

Billy Wayne Taylor, also known as John Wayne Taylor, 34, was charged Thursday afternoon after drug agents obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Oxford County Sheriff’s officials arrested Taylor at a camper he had lived in with his 42-year-old wife, Laura Ann Taylor, and their 9-year-old daughter.

Police said Taylor knew his wife was using prescription drugs illegally and that she sometimes used their daughter in an attempt to obtain them.

Investigators said that since the middle of May, Laura Ann had been scheming to get prescriptions written from physicians in Lewiston, Rumford and Bethel. She was charged Tuesday with seven counts of acquiring drugs by deception.

Investigators said that on several occasions, Laura Ann took the 9-year-old with her to doctors’ offices in an attempt to get additional drugs prescribed.

When police arrested Laura Ann Tuesday, child protection officials took custody of the the young girl. The 9-year-old was being cared for Thursday by officials from the Maine Department of Human Services.

After following up their investigation, drug agents sought a warrant to charge Billy Taylor with endangering the welfare of a child.

The crime is punishable by up to a year in jail.
