1922 – 2003

AUBURN – The spirit of Evelyn Smith, 81, left this world Sunday evening on June 29, with her daughter, Barbara by her side. She left this world to go to a better place, a place where her pain no longer exists. Her brave battle for life will always be remembered. She suffered bravely and silently for many years.

She was born in Lisbon Falls, the daughter of Harold and Florence (Clark) Goddard on Jan. 4, 1922. She graduated from Lisbon Falls High School and later married William Smith of Oxford. She worked in the Oxford Woolen Mill for many years before moving to Auburn where she worked numerous jobs. Her last one was being a nursing assistant.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, word jumbles, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. But most of all her life was enriched by her grandchildren, as were theirs by her. She lived her life always trying to help them and keep them safe.

She leaves behind her daughter, Barbara; a son, Norman; a very special niece, Nancy Michaud who was like another daughter to her; also her beloved grandsons, Brian, Dana and Eric McIntosh; her great-grandson, Brian Dana McIntosh Jr.; two great-granddaughters, Tori Lee McIntosh and her companion Mike Storer and Ashton McIntosh. Two days before her departure she was blessed with a precious great-great-granddaughter, Elise Meredith Storer. She also left behind her baby sister, Madelyn Hartjen of Ohio, many nieces and nephews. Last, but not least, she left her loving family of caregivers on One East at d’Youville Nursing Center. We will all miss her beautiful soul and her warm smile.

She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Ruth Brooks; brothers, Lawiston, Donald, Richard and Milton Goddard.
