1925 – 2003

LEWISTON – Guy S. Merrill Sr., 78, a resident of Minot Avenue, Auburn died peacefully on June 29, with his family by his side at Saint Mary’s Hospital.

He was born Feb. 28, 1925, in Bethel the son of Joel and Lulu Merrill, and step-mother Annie Merrill. He attended Bethel schools until he was 17 years old.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 where he went to Germany to serve in World War II. He also served in the Korean War and retired as Sergeant First Class in 1966.

After retiring he came back to Maine and worked at General Electric for 17 years. While employed at GE he enjoyed gardening and sold fruits and vegetables from his farm stand on Minot Avenue in Auburn.

In the summer time he loved to spend time camping and fishing in the Bethel area. He also enjoyed traveling, eating out, and wood working. He loved spending time with his family.

He really enjoyed the holiday’s especially when he knew all the family and grandchildren were going to be together. He would relax spending time in his rocking chair on the front porch. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. His sense of humor, wisdom, and concern for those he loved will keep his memory alive forever. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Joan P. (Johnson) Merrill of Auburn; five children, Nancy Merrill of Auburn, Edward Merrill of San Luis Obsipo, Calif., Debra Girouard and her husband Skip of Auburn, Dana and his wife Debbie of Greene, Guy Jr. and his wife Annette of Auburn; seven grandchildren, Erica Merrill of Boston, Mass., Joshua, Matthew, Nicholas and Kimberly Merrill of Auburn, Jessica Gilbert and her husband Fred of Nashville, Tenn., and Taylor Merrill of Greene; two sisters, Olive Williams and Beatrice (BT) Bean both of Bethel; and a brother, Kenneth of Norway.

He was predeceased by four sisters, Ruth, Nellie, Eva, and Helen; five brothers, Harmon, Fred, Earl, Lincoln and Harold; a grandson, Earvin Michael; and his mother and father-in-law, Arlene and Lester Johnson.
