FARMINGTON – Village Harmony will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 6, in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Village Harmony singers range from 13 to 18 years old. They come from across New England and as far away as California and North Carolina.

They’ll feature high energy gospel and vocal jazz; traditional songs from South Africa, Bulgaria and Georgia; and West African songs and dances.

The three principal leaders for this summer’s group are Patty Cuyler, Fred Onowerosuoke and John Harrison.

Cuyler is a specialist in the vocal music of Bulgaria and Caucasus Georgia. The ancient three-voice Georgian songs feature a darker, more sonorous vocal quality and unexpected harmonies.

Onowerosuoke conducted choirs and orchestras in Nigeria before moving to the United States in 1994. He founded and leads the St. Louis African Choir and is one of the foremost teachers and authorities on West African choral music in this country. His work with Village Harmony includes teaching the students traditional call-and-response songs and dances.

Harrison, who leads the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir, will lead his own transcriptions of songs by the Five Blind Boys of Alabama and other classic gospel quartets, some contemporary numbers and his own original pieces.

There are no advance ticket sales. Prices at the door are $5 for adults; $4, senior citizens, and free for children. The concert is sponsored by the Arts Institute of Western Maine. For more information, people may phone 645-2157.
