RUMFORD – New flags will adorn the information center flagpoles as well as the flag poles above the Muskie Memorial just in time for the Fourth of July celebration.

Town Manager Robert Welch said the town replaces the flags on an as-needed basis. Right now, the state of Maine and U.S. flags are rather worn. Just outside the information booth are United States, state and Canadian flags. Flying over the Muskie Memorial, which is just down the banking of the Androscoggin River’s reflection pool, are Rumford, state and U.S. flags.

New flags were delivered to the Municipal Building Wednesday morning. The Parks Commission will have them installed by sometime on Thursday.

The town maintains a special account for flag replacement, said Welch. The flags would have been replaced whether or not Friday was the Fourth, he added.

The information booth, which is largely staffed by volunteers, is operated by the River Valley Chamber of Commerce. Welch said if “open” flags need replacement, the town office should be notified.
