RUMFORD – If this year’s July 4th celebration is anything like those of the past, Congress and surrounding streets will be packed with people.

The Moontide Water Festival Committee has lined up a variety of events ranging from a first-time fishing derby at the reflection pool of the Androscoggin River beginning at 7 a.m., to a fireworks display at the same place at 9:15 p.m.

In between, music, magic, a duck race and many other events will take place in the downtown area, the information center parking lot, and at other sites surrounding Congress Street.

Besides the fishing derby, which is open for both children and adults, new this year is a performance by Inca Son Music and Dance of the Andes at 4 p.m. at the end of Congress Street. Other entertainment will be provided by Scott Grassette and his magic show and Leavin’ City Limits.

The fifth annual Lucky Duck Race begins at Bean Brook at 7 p.m. and ends in the reflection pool.

Mexico Police Chief Jim Theriault will defend his title in the Fifth Annual Chief’s Invitational at 12:30 p.m. at the reflection pool. He drove a golf ball the farthest during last year’s festivities and got to take home the trophy.

A Kid’s Corner filled with games, face painting, sand art and other activities will be set up at the park at the end of Congress Street. Classic cars and motorcycles will be on display from noon until 4 p.m. on Congress Street. Food vendors will offer festive foods including ice cream, sausages, cotton candy and french fries. Several craftspeople and flea marketers will also have their wares on display.

Other events include:

• Bingo at the Eagles Club starting at 1 p.m.

• Masonic Child Identification Program.

• Children’s Petting Zoo.

• Mainely Country Dancers at 1 p.m.

• River Valley Chamber charity auction at 2 p.m.

This year’s event is dedicated to Harding O. Wentzell, a longtime Mexico firefighter who died earlier this year after 23 years of service.
