RUMFORD – The daily events of the Rumford Public Library’s 27th annual Summer Fest will begin Monday, July 7, and continue through Aug. 1. Ginny Todd, children’s librarian, invites area children and their friends to participate in the variety of activities that will be offered during the four-week program.

The Summer Fest program is free of charge and includes story times, crafts, Picnics in the Park, theatrical productions, and many other fun-filled activities. Each Friday will feature noontime Picnics in the Park, when children are asked to bring their bag lunches and picnic blankets and join in the fun. In the event of inclement weather, picnics will be held in the Public Room. All other Summer Fest programs are at 3 p.m. and last approximately one hour. Parents are welcome at all the programs and are encouraged to attend with younger children.

The first week of Summer Fest 2003 begins on Monday, July 9, with a visit from Maine Forest Ranger Jay Bernard and Smokey Bear. They will talk about ways to keep all forest creatures safe.

Sue Bousquet and Deb Dolloff will be special guests on Tuesday with their program titled “On the Go!” These Peru Elementary School teachers will offer a session full of fun stories and activities.

On Wednesday, Pam Kent of Countryside Animal Hospital will talk about “Favorite Pets and their care.”

On Thursday, Rob and Kim White return to the library with their pet snakes.

The first Picnic in the Park takes place at noon Friday, July 11. Be sure to pack up a lunch and bring along a picnic blanket.

Rehearsals for the Children’s Theatre production of “The Little Mermaid” are well under way. For the past three weeks, about 40 young actors have been practicing their lines and songs for the play, which has been adapted by director Nancy O. DeMilner of Worthley Pond. Performances of “The Little Mermaid” will be Thursday, July 31, in the Rumford Town Hall auditorium.

In addition, a summer reading program, Take Flight With Reading! is offered as part of Summer Fest 2003 to encourage independent reading during children’s school vacation. The reading program began June 29 and will continue through July 26. Children interested in the summer reading program may get further information about the program and the reading incentives by picking up a weekly log in the children’s room.
