1913 – 2003

AUGUSTA – Reginald Scott Rose, 90, of Narrows Pond Road, Winthrop, died Thursday, July 3, at MaineGeneral Medical Center.

He was born in Canton, on Feb. 22, 1913, the son of Winfield and Bertha (Reed) Rose. He grew up in Canton where he attended schools and graduated from Canton High School in 1932.

“Reg” served in the United States Army, Company B, 1892nd Engineer Battalion from May 7, 1942 to Jan. 16, 1946 as a construction equipment operator and 1st class gunner. He was honorably discharged.

He worked as a bulldozer operator, building many of Maine’s roads until his retirement in 1977. After his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his family. During fishing season he could be found at one of his favorite spots on Maranacook Lake or Narrows Pond.

He was known for his elaborate vegetable garden and often could be found puttering in his yard. Even at age 90, he enjoyed a freedom and independence that few seldom achieve at that age. His quick whit and memorable stories will be sadly missed by all those that knew him. He was known for his strong Maine constitution and determination.

He is survived by his daughter, Regina L. Kelley of Winthrop; two sisters, Winifred Rose and Helen (Rose) Clinton of Canton; a brother, Shirley Rose of Canton; three granddaughters, Kimberly (Kelley) Dugal and her husband John-Paul of Winthrop, Kristen (Kelley) Ross and her husband Christopher of Terryville, Conn., and MacKenzie Kelley of Dover, N.H.; also survived by a nephew, nieces and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Katharine Dailey Rose; infant son, Reginald Rose; a brother, Clifford Rose; a sister, Pauline (Rose) Therrien; brother-in-law, Joseph Clinton; and a son-in-law, Stephen Kelley.
