RANGELEY – The Wilhelm Reich Museum’s Annual Awesome Auction will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, in its conference building on Dodge Pond Road.
Auctioneer Pete Smith will officiate.
Auction items include gift certificates from restaurants and shops, lodgings, a drop-leaf table, a Mikasa crystal bowl, Disney videos, a porcelain doll, a talking hobby horse and a leather log carrier. More than 100 items will be auctioned. If anyone has a special item they’d like to contribute, it will be welcome, according to the organizers.
Items will be on view at 9 a.m. July 12.

Hunter safety
WILTON – A hunter safety program will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 12 and 13 at the Wilton Fish and Game Association on Route 2.
Students, ages 10 to 12, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the program.

Founders Day fun
SALEM – The third annual Farmers Founders Day will be Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. Activities start with a 9 a.m. parade July 12, which begins at the Economic Ministry. A variety of activities then follow in the field by Dellie’s Store including a sack race, three-legged race, fry pan throw, hay bale toss, egg throw, crosscut and bucksaw contest, pulp throw and a wood splitting contest. A pie eating contest will be held at 11:30 a.m., a duck race at noon and an auction at 1 p.m. A beanhole bean supper will be offered from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Community Building followed A&E’s Hill country music at 7 p.m. at the Fire Station. On Sunday, a pancake breakfast begins the day from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Community Building. A church service will be held at 8 a.m. followed by an ATV egg ride at 10 a.m., a fly casting contest at 10:30 a.m., a karate demonstration at 11 a.m. and a kite flying contest at 11:30 a.m. A ball game is scheduled for 1 p.m. All these activities take place in the field by Dellie’s Store. Other events include a quilt and craft show from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Methodist church. Also available both days will be a dunk tank, kids games, vendors and a Chinese auction.
ATV ‘egg run’ set
SALEM – An ATV egg run will be held at Salem’s third annual Farmers Founders Day starting at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 13. Riders will complete a 20- to 30-minute course. Riders must register at Dellies Store or by phone at 678-2000 by July 5. Rider’s names will be posted for egg donations. Cash prizes will be given.
Library meeting
WILTON – The annual association meeting of the Wilton Free Public Library will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 15, at the library. All are welcome.
Hunter safety course
RANGELEY – A free hunter-safety course, open to the public, is being sponsored by the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association at the group’s clubhouse on Old Skiway Road in Oquossoc. Classes will be 6 to 9 p.m. on July 21 and 22 as well as July 28 and 29. Anyone between the ages of 10-12 must be accompanied by an adult. Baldacci at benefit
FARMINGTON – Gov. John Baldacci will be the guest chef as he serves spaghetti and the Baldacci Restaurant sauce at a benefit meal from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 16 Wilton Road.
The meal will include entree, tossed salad and Italian bread. All of the $5 meal donation will go to Portland’s Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.
The entertainment will feature Michael Worthley, a balladeer with acoustic guitar; TJ, a composer and crooner; and Maine’s Jim Gallant playing live during the event.
Food, craft sale
NORTH JAY – A food and craft sale will be held from 8:30 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at North Jay Methodist Parish House by the United Methodist Women. Doughnuts, coffee and other food will be available, including lunch items to take out or to eat there. The thrift shop will be open all day.
Christian concert
FARMINGTON – The youth choir will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at the Fairbanks Union Church. Sparrow’s Song, the youth choir of Mission at the Eastward’s Eastward Players, will present “More Than Solos,” an hour-long concert of popular Christian songs from the last decade, as well as several other tunes that many people know and love. Angler’s service
NORTH NEW PORTLAND – A celebration service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 13, in the North New Portland Community Church. A special first annual Angler’s Service will celebrate the beautiful mountain region and honor a tradition reaching back to the 1940s.
The Rev. Scott Planting will lead the service of special music and readings. A special guest speaker, Gary Cobb of North New Portland and Pierce Pond Camps, will present a short history of the sport of fishing in Somerset County, and the congregation will be treated to several “Dud Dean” stories, which originated in the Bingham area. Perennials program
FARMINGTON – The Mount Blue Garden Club summer program will be on “English- Scottish Gardens” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Carolyn Jensen’s, 6 Dodge Corner Road in Strong. People will be able to enjoy naturalized perennials, herbs and shrubs, with collections of day lilies and hostas. It also will be the peak season for delphiniums.
From downtown Farmington, go through the main traffic light, go 2.5 miles to South Strong Road or Route 149, turn right, go 2.5 miles, turn right on Streeter Road to fork. Go right on Fredericks Road to top of hill, turn left on Dodge Corner Road, driveway 50 feet on the left. The refreshments will include day lily appetizers.
Italian supper
FARMINGTON – An Italian Night Supper will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Route 2. Sponsored by church’s Men’s Club, it will feature all homemade foods. It will be $6 per person.
Firefighters group
NEW SHARON – The next Franklin County Fireman’s Association will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at the New Sharon Fire Station. All county firefighters and interested persons are invited to attend. There will be a program presented by the local fire department as well as refreshments and a door prize drawing.
Delegate to speak
NEW VINEYARD – The Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, in the Historical Room. Daniel Lightbody, a delegate to Boys State, will talk about his experience at the Maine Maritime Academy. All are welcome. The New Vineyard Historical Society Room will be open Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. during July and August.
Group to hear hiker
RANGELEY – The Rangeley Region Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at the barn. There will be reports and election of officers. The speaker will be Bill Eddy, a local former Appalachian Trail hiker. The public is invited and refreshments will be served.
Music’s history, healing
FARMINGTON – African-American Calvin Earl will give a concert and lecture from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, July 18, in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.
In “The Gifts from My Ancestors,” Earl invites his audience to experience America’s first original music created by the African-American slaves and examine the oral history in the music, the art of storytelling, singing and dancing. Earl has given one-man performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center for the Arts, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and at many universities.
Earl writes, “In the concert you will experience America’s priceless heritage of music and oral history created by the people who were enslaved in this country; learn how they created an original music that enabled them to secretly communicate with each other, teach their young, record their history and heal their pain.”
The public is welcome to attend this event sponsored by the Upward Bound Program at UMF. There will be no admission charge, but donations will be welcome.
‘Love Letters’
WELD – The American Legion Auxiliary Post 203 of Weld will present “Love Letters” at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 20, in the Town Hall. The play, by A. R. Gurney, stars Annabelle Banton and Ron Ashworth.
This play is in two acts with a 15-minute intermission. Refreshments will be served. The admission is $5 at the door.
