MEXICO – Selectmen will act on a new parking configuration for the lot and trail located at the rear of the town office when they meet on Wednesday. They will also get an update on the downtown facade program and decide whether a new ordinance is needed to cover run down and unsafe buildings.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the town office.

Town Manager Joseph Derouche said some modifications to how parking spaces are aligned have been made since a petition requesting a change was presented to the board last month. He declined to say what they were.

The rear of the town office has recently been paved. The back portion will become part of a trail, while a center section will be the site of a community gazebo. Some residents objected to the way cars would be parked at the immediate rear of the town office and other municipal building located at the site.

Code Enforcement Officer David Errington was asked at an earlier meeting to compile a list of unsafe, potentially unsafe or abandoned buildings within the town. At Wednesday’s meeting, selectmen will explore whether there are legal ways to toughen current ordinances governing such structures.

Also related to townwide beautification is the progress of the facade program. Right now, more than 30 businesses have taken advantage of federal funds that pay half the costs for improving the fronts of buildings.

Other agenda items include appointments to the Board of Appeals, setting the dates for the town manager review and for the annual Night of Appreciation for town employees, and discussion on taking out a tax anticipation loan if needed.

The board will also meet in a closed session following public matters to discuss a possible business venture.

A public hearing on a request to designate a 30-minute parking space in front of Radio Shack will lead off the 6:30 p.m. meeting.
