YORK HARBOR (AP) – A 68-year-old man drowned Friday while trying to rescue his nine-year-old grandson, who had been swimming in the cold ocean waters off Stage Neck Point, police said.

The boy was swimming at Harbor Beach when he was overcome by the surf and undertow, according to a statement from the York Police Department.

The boy’s grandfather entered the water but wasn’t able to reach him, police said.

The boy’s father then swam out and brought his son to shore.

The father and three others later reached the grandfather and pulled him from the water, and emergency personnel performed CPR.

But the man was pronounced dead at York Hospital, according to authorities.

Police did not immediately release the names of anyone involved pending notification of family members.

The boy and his father were both treated for hypothermia at York Hospital and then released.
