AUGUSTA — Old Fort Western, the 1754 National Historic Landmark fort, store and house museum on the Kennebec River, will host a photographers weekend from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27.

All visitors bringing a camera with them will be admitted free. The fort will conduct a photography contest for those who wish to participate. Participants take as many photographs while visiting the fort as they choose, then send those they like best to the fort.

Old Fort Western will select what it determines to be the best 25 of the photographs submitted. The selected photographs will be exhibited at city hall sometime after September. Submissions may be black-and-white or color prints and must be 8×10. No slides will be accepted. All submissions become the property of Old Fort Western. Details and a release form will be available at the fort.

Christine Nelson, proprietor of East Side Photo in Augusta, will be on hand from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday to help beginning photographers who may have lighting, exposure, composition or other questions.

Old Fort Western is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. now through Labor Day. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 6 to 16. Kids under 6 are admitted free. The summer special event schedule is available at
