RUMFORD – The River Valley Chamber of Commerce will again support the SCCA Maine Forest Pro-Rally on Aug. 1 and 2.

Dozer day

OXFORD – Dozer Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Oxford County Fairgrounds on Route 26. Rain date will be Sunday, July 27. It will be an opportunity to see equipment such as bulldozers, excavators and snowplows and learn how they work. This family day will benefit Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Child Health Center and Boxberry School. It’s being held in cooperation with Associated Constructors of Maine and Women Unlimited. Cost will be $4 per person or $10 family; children under 3 will be admitted free.

Pig roast

RUMFORD – Blazing Star Lodge on Route 232 in Rumford Center will have an open-pit barbecue pig roast at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 26. The menu will include roast pork, mashed potato, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, beverages and dessert. There will be two settings, at 5 p.m. and at 6:15 p.m. Takeouts will be available. Cost for adults is $6 and for children 12 and under, $3. A chairlift is on the back stairs, and the building is now air-conditioned. Jazz band

BETHEL – The Bellamy Jazz Band will play Sunday, July 27 on the Bethel Common as part of the Libbie Goodridge Kneeland Memorial Summer Series presented by the Mahoosuc Arts Council. The band combines traditional New Orleans, Chicago jazz and swing. The eight-piece group offers instrumental virtuosity, vocals, lighthearted humor and nostalgic storytelling. These guys play a loose, jammin’ jazz ranging from Preservation Hall to Count Basie. The free concerts in the series begin at 4 p.m. and run 60 to 90 minutes. Upcoming concerts will feature New York-based, Rumford raised jazz vocalist Rebecca Martin on Aug. 3 and the female barbershop harmonies of The Mollyockett Chorus on Aug. 24. The rain site is Bingham Auditorium on Church Street at Gould Academy.

Theme: adventure

PERU – “The Great Global Adventure” will be the theme of Vacation Bible School at the United Baptist Church. All children age 3 through grade six are being invited to join the adventure Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. Beginning at 9 a.m. each day, children will get involved in the search for Witt, games at the Outback Station, Bible exploration at the Globalink Station and crafts at the “straw market.” Everyone will find a snack at the sidewalk cafe. Anti-fear class

MEXICO – The Maine Center for Women, Work and Community is offering a free class, “Moving through Fear,” at the University College at Rumford/Mexico on Brown Street. Dance auditions

RUMFORD – On Tuesday, July 29, RAAPA will hold auditions for female dancers for the Nov. 1 and 2 anniversary show. The dance will be for the song “And All That Jazz” and the only requirement is that the dancers be high school age or older. Previous dance experience is not necessary. The choreographer for the show is Connie Zadakis Porter who ran her own dance school for many years and choreographed most of the musicals which RAAPA produced. Auditions will be at the Rumford United Methodist Church on Linnell Street (in the Virginia section of Rumford) at 7 p.m. For more information, people can contact Judy Kuhn at 364-7242.

Chalk program

DIXFIELD – Chalk artist Bob Friedl and his wife, Shirley, will present a program “Jesus Is Calling America” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Aug. 3, in the Dixfield Common Baptist Church. This will be a unique presentation of chalk artistry, brought to life by a hidden black light, narration and music. Since 1980, the Friedls have traveled the country as one of several teams in the God’s Helping Hands organization of Gobles, Mich. The public is welcome to attend.

Dirigo High’s plan

DIXFIELD – Members of Dirigo High School’s Promising Futures team recently attended the Summer Institute on “Planning for Whole School Change” at Bowdoin College. This ambitious project is sponsored by the Great Maine Schools Project at the Mitchell Institute and the Southern Maine Partnership. Schools invited to the institute had received grants of varying amounts from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Attending from Dirigo were Dan Hart, Dianna Dority, Shirley Austin, Brad Conant and Kevin O’Reilly. The three days were divided into team-planning times and presentation time. Each team created an action plan to take back to share with the school community.
