BRUNSWICK – Habitat for Humanity/Bath Brunswick Area has launched a Youth United program, the first project of its kind in the state. This means that kids from all over midcoast Maine will have an opportunity to get together to sponsor and build a house for a local qualified family.
This spring Youth United kicked off its campaign with a rally. Youths participated in the Easter Season Walkathon as the first fund-raising effort. There are still many more tasks that need to be completed before a house can be built.
First, people need to plan the project. A steering committee is organizing the plans for the project as the number of youth associated with Youth United continues to grow.
Next, Youth United needs to publicize its mission in order to gather more volunteers. Then it needs to raise enough money to sponsor a house.
Once all of these preparatory steps have been completed, the group will begin the final step – construction. The steering committee is aiming for construction to begin this fall.
An informational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at the Curtis Memorial Library. Kids working with Youth United will give a presentation on the ways to get involved. If interested but unable to attend, call the Habitat office at 729-0311.
