Family Fun Day is held once a month, and is free and open to the public.

TOPSHAM – Advocates for Children sponsored a Family Fun Day outing to the Desert of Maine recently.

The Desert of Maine, which used to be a 300-acre farm, is a natural phenomenon. It was exposed after severe soil erosion resulted from massive land clearing and overgrazing.

Geologists have established that a glacier slid through 11,000 years ago and left behind the sand and mineral deposits that today comprise the Desert of Maine.

Advocates for Children provides education, support and advocacy to families in Androscoggin County. Family Fun Day is held once a month, and is free and open to the public.

The next event will be Music Mania, featuring Melissa Sundell. She will bring musical instruments for children to play while singing songs and dancing together. Music Mania will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Parent Resource Center, 157 Main St., Lewiston. To register, call 783-3990.
