GRAY — The third annual Ride for Healthy Babies will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20. Led by a police escort, motorcyclists will leave from the Gray Market Shopping Center on Route 100/26 at 10 a.m., travel to Norway, then circle back to the ending point, Sebago Lake State Park. Lunch will be served by the South Portland High School Key Club at the park.

The minimal entry fee is $25 an individual, and prizes will be awarded to all riders raising $85 or more. “Everybody who enters will get a unique 2003 Ride pin and lunch but higher fund-raisers will get T-shirts, caps, gift certificates, based on the amount they raise,” said Jere Hoover, ride director.

The money will help in the organization’s campaign to reduce the increases in premature birth. Hoover said, “We’ve seen premature birth rates increase 28 percent in Maine in the past 11 years. Many of these babies are born sick with lifelong illnesses and disabilities.”

Motorcyclists interested can call the March of Dimes at 1-800-668-5678 or pick up a registration form at Schott’s Harleys R Us in Lewiston and other area motorcycle shops.
