1907 – 1999

GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. – Alice Doyle Prescott, 91, died on Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at her home in Green Valley, Ariz. She and her husband, George, had been residents of Green Valley for over 20 years. They divided their time between Green Valley and their summer cottage in Brownfield.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1907, in Calais, to Andrew Richard and Elizabeth (Murphy) Doyle of Calais and was the last surviving of 14 children. The family moved to Baileyville (Woodland), in 1917 and she attended public schools in Calais and Woodland, graduating from St. Croix High School (Woodland) in 1924. She attended Gorham Normal School (Gorham Teacher’s College), after which she began a career as an elementary school teacher.

She taught elementary school in Waterville and Augusta and met her husband, George, in Augusta. They were married on Jan. 3, 1940. Her employment included work in Boston during George’s graduate school days, editorial work for the World Book Co. in New York City and a two-year tour in Ankara, Turkey, where she taught in the American school.

She and her husband, George, lived in Norwalk, Conn. and Orono, before retirement brought them to Green Valley. He and Alice traveled extensively in the U.S., Europe, Russia and the Middle East. She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Green Valley, Ariz.

Survivors include 17 nieces and nephews and their numerous children who are dispersed from Maine to Tokyo.
