1941 – 2003

BRUNSWICK – Robert B. Hlister, 61, of Country Lane, Durham, died late Sunday evening, Aug. 3, at Parkview Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born in Lewiston, Nov. 5, 1941, a son of Stevan and Celina (Powers) Hlister. He was educated in local schools and graduated from Lisbon High School in the Class of 1961.

On Feb. 27, 1965 he married the former Dorothy Michele Kenopensky at St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Lisbon Falls.

He retired from the Brunswick Naval Air Station March 1, 2002 after working 29 years in the public works department. He was selected Navy Civilian in the 1st quarter of 1991 and the fouth quarter of 1998. He held several union offices in Local R1-77 NAGE including 2nd Vice President, Director and Shop Steward.

He was a charter member of Sportman’s Alliance of Maine and was a certified State of Maine Archery Instructor. He was an authorized Amsoil Dealer and was a volunteer fireman for the Town of Lisbon for 17 years before moving to Durham.

He coached Babe Ruth Senior League Baseball for two years as assistant manager for Mark’s Variety.

He was a member of several clubs and organizations including, BPOE Elks Lodge in Brunswick, Slovak Catholic Association, Lisbon Fish & Game, National Rifle Association, United Bikers of Maine and the Pejepscot Snow Chiefs Snowmobile Club.

He was an avid sportsman and loved all outdoors sports including, rifle and archery hunting, boating, motorcycling, snowmobiling and especially fishing. He made his own flies and lures and was extremely proud of the 22″ 5 5/16 lb. brook trout that he caught while ice fishing with his son in January of 2001.

He loved to teach and show people how to do things, especially his two grandsons whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, socializing and catching up on the local news. No subject escaped his interest, and he was always eager to learn something new or to figure out how things worked.

He enjoyed helping people solve problems and faced every challenge with an open mind and total dedication. His quick wit and big smile will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

He leaves his wife of 38 years, Michele of Durham; a daughter, Karen Hlister and her companion, Gregory Fortin of Lisbon Falls; a son, Robert Hlister of Lewiston; two grandsons, Brian Hlister of Monmouth and Christopher Fortin of Lisbon Falls; a brother, Richard of California; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Kenopensky of Lisbon Falls; a half-sister, Stephanie Croteau and husband, Marc of Lewiston; two aunts. Josephine Bernier and husband Adrien of Brunswick, and Irene Bailey and husband Hollis of Brunswick; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.
