LEWISTON – A local man has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend in the head and other parts of her body.

Jeffrey Coffin, 44, was indicted Tuesday by an Androscoggin County grand jury on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Police say they went to Coffin’s apartment on Pine Street on the morning of July 9 after receiving a call that a couple was fighting inside.

When they arrived, they heard two people yelling. According to Lewiston Deputy Chief Mike Bussiere, the officers eventually forced their way in.

Coffin’s girlfriend was covered in blood, she had cuts on her hands and head and a knife was in the apartment, Bussiere said.

The girlfriend told police that Coffin had threatened to kill her and that he prevented her from calling police. Coffin was arrested at the scene, and his girlfriend was rushed to a local hospital where she was treated and released.

The couple had been together for several years, Bussiere said. They told police that they had recently moved to Lewiston.

If convicted of attempted murder and aggravated assault, Coffin could face up to 40 years in prison. He is scheduled to appear in Androscoggin County Superior Court Friday to enter his plea.
