RUMFORD – Burglaries and criminal mischief complaints kept police busy this week.

On Thursday, a Maine Avenue tenant returned home to discover that her eight cats were missing, said Sgt. Stacy Carter.

Police investigated and learned that the tenant’s landlord had entered her apartment in response to complaints and removed the cats.

He then turned them over to Animal Control Officer Marsha McKenna at her McKennel’s Animal Adoption Center on Hall Hill Road in South Rumford, Carter added.

Another burglary occurred Thursday at 4 a.m. when a Gordon Avenue resident at Rumford Point reported to police that a man had broken into his home and threatened his 18-year-old son, Carter said. Officer Eric DeWitt is investigating.

A 17-year-old Mexico boy was summoned Tuesday for criminal mischief after he reportedly was caught breaking a window at Bisson & Hebert on Essex Avenue.

Also on Tuesday, police were called to Hannaford’s at 6:37 p.m. to deal with a man who was reportedly harassing a company employee at the service desk, Carter said.

Police investigated and told the man, Richard Downs, 52, of Rumford to leave and not return.

Downs left, but then returned to the store and was promptly arrested, charged with criminal trespass, booked and released on $150 unsecured bail, Carter added.

Officer Daniel Garbarini is investigating a criminal mischief complaint that occurred at a High Street residence Tuesday when someone threw a rock at a picture window sometime between Monday and Tuesday morning. Damage to the broken window was estimated at $1,000.

Officer Peter Casey is investigating a car burglary in which a locked car, parked at the Eagles parking lot, was broken into sometime Sunday night. The thief, who didn’t damage the car, took a cell phone and a set of keys, Carter said. It was reported at 6:10 p.m. Monday.
