1912 – 2003

SACO – Lewis Ervin Webber, 91, of Chases Lane, Saco, died peacefully, of natural causes at his residence on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Born in Livermore Falls, July 5, 1912, a son of Claude and Grace Norton Webber, he graduated from Farmington High School in 1929 and from Farmington State Normal School in 1931. Later he received a bachelor and master’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono, followed by graduate study at Columbia and Boston Universities.

In 1931, Mr. Webber began teaching in Trevett in the Boothbay region. From there he went to Kingfield, where he also coached high school basketball and track. On Aug.t 26, 1934, he married his wife, Louise Clark Webber.

In 1936, he moved to Saco, where he was teaching principal in the Sweetser and C.K. Burns schools. During World War II, he was an air navigator in the U.S. Naval Reserves with duty in both the Atlantic and far Pacific areas.

In 1950 Mr. Webber became a superintendent of schools, serving three years in the Cornish six-town union, three years in the Camden-Hope-Thomaston district and in Auburn from 1956 until retirement in 1970.

As a member of the Maine Teachers Association, he served on the welfare, legislative and executive committees, was a delegate to the representative assembly and represented the MTA on the Maine State Retirement System Board of Trustees from 1960-1968.

While a member of the Elementary Principals Association, he served as parliamentarian. He also served as president of the Maine School Superintendents Association and as a member of the legislative and executive committees.

With the New England Superintendents Association he was on the policies committee, the Council for the Advancement of School Administration and the Board of Directors. While a member of the American Association of School Administrators he was appointed to the Advisory Council. Other various responsibilities included membership on the Governor’s Highway Safety Conference School Bus Division, corporator of the Auburn Savings Bank (Mid Maine Savings) and the Central Maine General Hospital (CMMC) auditor for the Maine Retired Teachers Association and chairman of the Finance and Pastor-Parish Committees for the Auburn and Saco United Methodist Churches.

Mr. Webber was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Saco. His memberships included the Saco Masonic Lodge No. 9, F & AM, Annette Chapter O.E.S. and the National, State and York County Retired Teachers Associations.

For many years, Mr. Webber and his wife enjoyed traveling in their R.V. throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Visits to Alaska and several trips abroad were special treats.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Louise Clark Webber of Saco; one sister, Agnes W. Tyler of Farmington; two brothers, Claude Webber Jr. of Standish and G. Moulton Webber of Sidney; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Fabyan W. Carr; and three brothers, Bernald, Norton and Walter Webber.
