PERU – Selectmen Monday night signed the tax assessment forms, and tax bills will be mailed out this week by Town Clerk and Tax Assessor Vera Parent. The new bills will reflect a 14.5 mill rate which is .5 less than last year.

Road Commissioner David Gammon reported that driveway culverts are almost finished on High Street. Heavy rains brought more problems and he had to add another culvert, he said.

He also has to get the seeding done on High Street. He said he needs to get brush cut, cold patch some spots and put up some more street signs up. He has to replace some that were taken down by vandals. Gammon said he needs approximately 2,000 yards of sand.

Selectman Jim Pulsifer motioned to have the sand put out to bid and the motion passed.

Gammon said he had someone who wanted to buy the town fuel tank for $250.

Putting a crosswalk at the store on Worthley Pond was agreed upon.

There was only one bid for the septic systems for the small community grants. Pulsifer moved to accept the bid from Gorham contracting for approximately $18,000 upon approval from the Department of Human Services.

An intent to harvest 80 acres by Thomas Richard was approved.

Discussion arose over the fact that there is no more money in the budget for operating the kitchen in Rockemeka Hall and Pulsifer said they may have to close the kitchen until they can find funds to keep it open.

Maine Municipal Association sent a letter for the selectmen to review on Gov. John Baldacci’s proposed competing measure. MMA has gone through the petition process to get a referendum question on the state ballot. This would require the state to fund education at a specified level.

Baldacci proposes a competing measure that will not provide the property tax relief anticipated under the MMA proposal.

Selectman Ron Chartier spoke to requesting Med-Care to provide financial statements that reflected receivables and depreciation on equipment in addition to their usual book keeping. Pulsifer offered to go with Chartier to help them get started in this process.
